Swimming for work:

Some jobs need people to be able to swim. For example, the person looking for abalone or pearls must swim and dive for economic gain.

Swimming is used to rescue other swimmers when they are exhausted. In the US, most cities and states train rescuers, they are deployed in swimming pools and beaches. There are several swimming styles specifically for rescue purposes (see List of swim styles). Rescuers or members of the US Coast Guard must learn these techniques.
