For children, it is true that learning how to swim and how to swim is a small matter, depending on each child. However, it is another story that adults learn to swim and know to swim. For adults who learn to swim, the first thing they need to do is change their mindset first! If not, knowing how to swim is difficult for them – it is difficult from making the decision to learn how to swim to the actual learning time.

The difficulty of adults going to swimming lessons, all in all, is due to the four words “embarrassed – afraid – strange – discouraged”. Children go to swimming lessons feel “strange” only, but rarely “embarrassed – afraid – discouraged”. Because children are not embarrassed, not afraid, not discouraged, they can swim quickly; they like the feeling strange because children have a curious mentality, love to explore.

For beginners to swim, go to an environment where lots of swimmers are swimming in the pool. As for me, I practice pedaling along with many movements on the shore, I will definitely be shy. This is the biggest reason why you stop learning how to swim.

People are often just afraid of what they don’t understand or of knowing too much! The fear of not understanding is a temporary fear. For example, students do not understand the lesson so they are afraid of that subject. If they understand the lesson well, they do not fear; People do not understand the characteristics of water, so they are afraid of water. If they have gotten used to it, they will not be afraid. And the fear of knowing too much is the fear of experience, of experience.



However, in fear of water, bad experiences (due to have drowned in the past) are also present but not much, only fear of water due to indirect experiences from books, movies, rumors. Therefore, adults are often proud that they have a lot of experience, but the experience of terrestrial life is different from the experience of living in the water, sometimes the experience of living on land creates the psychology of fear of water when learning to swim. Water is a strange, unfamiliar environment. This unfamiliar environment leads to difficulties “everyone has”, including Michael Phelps! You’re not the only one having trouble getting into the water for the first time. There are 3 difficult things when you get into the water for the first time:

Horizontal in water

On the shore, we all rely on 6 directions (front, back, top, bottom, right, left) to orient space in order to maintain a stable posture in the standing position. Our brain remembers these state data for most motor activities we perform in everyday life. However, these data are useless when the body changes its position and is in water. What is above when standing now is behind when lying, what is below when standing now is in front when lying down, and so on, “panic up”. That leaves us all disoriented, confused and tense.

Did you notice that when I was lying in the water for the first time, I automatically raised my head because at that time I wanted to look forward like in a standing position, but actually I was lying horizontally, looking forward It must be looking at the bottom of the lake! Therefore, we need to create a new database to support the brain to gradually understand the new posture in the water. It is not difficult but it takes time.

Breathe in the water

On the shore, we usually inhale and exhale through the nose. But in the water, you have to practice breathing in through your mouth, breathing out through the mouth and nose. Just bring the habit of “breathing” through the nose into the water, you will choke immediately. Usually, everyone who is just practicing must choke on the water a few times to remember. That is not to mention not always want to breathe but breathe, but must combine breathing with movements of arms, legs, head, neck so that the rhythm is correct. It is not difficult but it takes time.

Mobility in the water

On the shore, the basic movements in the upright position rarely use shoulder joints with large amplitudes and especially rarely use circular hand movements. Therefore, our shoulder joints are often inflexible. That makes it difficult for us initially in the movements of lifting hands out of the water in swimming styles (except breaststroke). However, exercise will help make joints more flexible. It is not difficult but it takes time.

The difficulty stems from “strange” is due to the unfamiliar environment. “Before strange after familiar” is the end of difficulty.


Humans are born with no innate swimming ability. We have to learn to swim. But learning to swim has its own difficulties due to practicing in an unfamiliar environment with water (analyzed above). So, in learning to swim, it is important to remember 2 things:

1. Be patient

Learning to swim will be ineffective if the student is impatient or the teacher is impatient. If the teacher is impatient (wants to teach quickly, teach short) or if the student is impatient (wants to learn quickly, quickly learn to swim), the results are not satisfactory, making the student easily discouraged and give up. Learning to swim becomes easy only once you get the right lessons and allow yourself enough time to practice.

2. Time is gold
